Research-driven, Evidence-led: Canberra’s Centre for Venous Excellence.
Dr. Alex Lapenga is a specialist medical practitioner with a strong foundation in rural general practice and advanced expertise in venous medicine and dermatological laser therapies. Over a career spanning more than 15 years – including 13 years in rural North Queensland. Dr. Lapenga has developed a clinical and procedural skillset that bridges frontline generalist care with sub-specialised expertise in chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and laser-based treatments.
Dr. Lapenga holds Fellowships with:
• The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM)
• The College of Phlebology UK (Fellowship in Endovenous Surgery – FCPhleb)
• The Australian College of Aesthetic Medicine (FACAM)
Dr. Lapenga is also a Certified Sclerotherapist with the Australian College of Phlebology.
Dr. Lapenga has contributed original research to Phlebology, the international peer-reviewed journal of venous disease, and currently serves as a moderator and research contributor to the College of Phlebology UK’s Practice Feedback Initiative, which seeks to improve standards through structured peer review and real-world practice analysis in Phlebology.
As the founder of CVLM in Canberra, Dr. Lapenga leads a program of clinical research and quality improvement focused on early detection, accurate classification, and treatment optimisation of venous disease-particularly segmental incompetence and its non-cosmetic manifestations (pain, restlessness, swelling, skin changes).
Dr. Lapenga’s procedural practice includes endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (UGS), and microsclerotherapy, complemented by vascular and dermatological laser platforms for conditions such as rosacea, venous lakes, angiomas, and port-wine stains.
Clinical collaborations, research partnerships, and cross-disciplinary referrals are welcomed – particularly from general practitioners, dermatologists, vascular surgeons, and allied health professionals involved in the care of patients with leg symptoms of unclear origin.
We are able to provide a clinical assessment including an in house ultrasound to advise on the most appropriate clinical management plan for your veins.
We use a wide array of lasers to treat a number of skin conditions including skin rejuvenation, ablation, pigment reduction, and vascular skin lesions.
